HEADSHOTS FAQ

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR MY HEADSHOT SESSION?

Actors

Solid colors in a medium shade work best. No patterns, stripes, prints or dots. Colors that are too dark, too light, black, or white do not pop out as much online as clothing rich in color in a medium shade. So as a general rule stay away from white, black, gray, and brown for commercial photographs. For more dramatic theatrical shots black works out for some people really well.

Suits can be black or gray for commercial shots.

Another exception is patterns that spell out a specific character iconically. Although the pattern may be distracting from your face, it may just get you the audition because it’s so specific to the character they’re casting. Example: A casting director is trying to cast a farmer for a new milk commercial. They are scrolling through 1000 thumbnails of submitted headshots and see some guy in a red plaid flannel shirt and overalls, this is iconic farmer attire. That level of specificity will at least get a casting director to take a second look if not get you a call in for the audition. Here the distracting pattern (red plaid) worked in the actors favor. This rule can apply to other things like stripes to illustrate a loud character type, or a crazy print shirt for a rocker type.

Professionals

For most professionals you can wear anything you want as long as it’s appropriate for your line of work. Avoiding patterns or busy clothing often yields the best results.

IS MY DEPOSIT REFUNDABLE?

No, so please be certain that you want to shoot before you put down a deposit or schedule an appointment online.

HOW FAR OUT ARE YOU BOOKED?

You can see my calendar online 24/7 HERE.

DO YOU SHOOT CELEBRITIES?

Yes – Please see my blog entries for who I’ve done recently.

DO ANY BIG AGENCIES RECOMMEND YOU BY NAME?

Yes, some really great agencies do. Agents from Coast to Coast, House of Reps, Pinkerton, Momentum, and Aqua have all recommended my photography to their clients.

IF I’M A NEW ACTOR CAN YOU HELP WITH GETTING AN AGENT?

Having headshots taken by one of the finest photographers in Los Angeles is the best way for a new actor to catch the attention of an agency. Please go to this website if you’d like to get a list of all the agencies in town by name and what agency they work for along with contact information. www.LAcasting.com is also the best place to sign up after getting your new headshots to get commercial and low budget theatrical auditions and possibly a new agent.

WHAT DO YOU SHOOT WITH?

I shoot digitally on a 21.2 mega pixel Canon 1ds Mark III, and a 22 Megapixel 5d Mk III.

HOW LONG DOES A HEADSHOT SESSION TAKE?

About 30 minutes per look on average, but sometimes more sometimes less. If you’re a women who is concerned about how long it takes to do your makeup between shots call after you book and we’ll add more time onto the end of your shoot so you wont feel rushed.

WILL I HAVE TIME TO SHAVE, OR STRAIGHTEN/CURL MY HAIR?

Yes, people do this all the time.

DO I HAVE TO WEAR MATCHING BOTTOMS TO MY TOPS?

For headshots it’s not necessary. For full body shots, yes the whole outfit should be well styled.

WILL YOU HELP ME PICK OUT MY OUTFITS FROM THE WARDROBE I BRING?

Yes.

HOW MANY SHOTS DO YOU TAKE PER LOOK?

50-150.

DO YOU CHARGE EXTRA FOR RETOUCHING?

Yes, it’s $20 per photo.

WHAT’S YOUR STYLE OF SHOOTING?

I shoot everyone a little differently, depending on their personality and needs. Sometimes people need direction and so I’ll give it. Sometimes people know what to do and so I’ll just throw ideas out there and they’re free to take off with them. I love to hear your ideas and feedback and I’m open to anyway and anything people want to shoot. If you bring in sample shots I can reproduce the lighting and feel of them for you.

WILL THE MAKEUP ARTIST STAY THE WHOLE TIME?

Yes. Guys usually don’t need a makeup artist. If you’d like to have it done, it’s minimum $125. Anthony will do light make up free of charge for men.

WHAT IF SOMETHING’S WRONG WITH MY PHOTOS – DO YOU OFFER RESHOOTS?

Yes. If anything I do goes wrong during the shoot that would require a reshoot, the reshoot is free (lighting, lack of expression, poor background choice). If you do something wrong, like wear facial hair and then find out afterward your agents wants it clean shaven then in that case I’ll reshoot at half price. It’s always best to have a detailed conversation about what your agent or manager wants BEFORE taking photos. If you are to wake up with a swollen face from an allergic reaction on the day of the shoot, then it’s best to pay the last minute cancellation fee rather then shooting then having to pay for a reshoot if the issue is too obvious.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET MY PHOTOS AFTER WE SHOOT?

20-30 Minutes. Unless we shoot RAW, then they are available the next day or so.

STUDIO OR NATURAL LIGHT?

I use both, but mostly natural, to achieve whatever it is we’re going for with your specific look. I can take them all outdoors, on location, or with studio backgrounds. I go with whatever fits the picture best, and I’m not opposed to either or any way so long as it works.

DO YOU SHOOT ON LOCATION?

The shoot is usually a mixture of both in studio and on location.

For Windows systems you’ll want to use Google’s Picasa to view the files. You may download it for free HERE.
